I have been reading a few articles on GTD (Getting Things Done) and being productive and in order. I came across this article by Marc Andrresseen (cofounder of Netscape and co-author of Mosaic) called The Pmarca Guide to Personal Productivity. I find this article interesting and makes me wonder if a person can really only check email twice a day. Then there is the first bullet which is ’don’t keep a schedule’. Now I like that idea completely. I like the idea of making a to-do list with 3-5 items on it and making sure you accomplish at least those items in a day. He goes on to say use a 3×5 card for this list and on the back write down the other to-do items that popup and you complete. Then at the end of the day you can look back on your card and see your initial to-do list is finished and then turn it over to see all the other things you accomplished. Marc says this gives you a great sense of accomplishment.
I am torn between using a PDA (personal assistant device) or 3×5 card(s). I figure I need to get use to technology since that is what I do best. I currently use a Cingular 8525 cell phone by Cingular the new AT&T. I use it for my cellular phone and PDA. I will be sure to write a review on this in the near future.
My struggles with GTD or productivity is that I am like a fireman at my job. I can have some down time (lot sometimes) and then other times I am swamped and overloaded. So there is no real planning that can be done. A task list would only be for personal items I need to get done. Now if I have a new server to build and implement then yes I can use a task list and it works great.
I would like to hear what others have to say about this topic.
Have a great day and a wonderful week.
JB
